Periodontal Disease

What is Peridontal disease? Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects approximately 35% of individuals over 30 years of age in the US.  It is generally caused by a build-up of plaque, which contains bacteria and toxins.  The plaque and tartar (calcified plaque) irritate the gum tissue.  This irritation is exacerbated by toxins that are produced by the bacteria and enzymes which your body produces as an inflammatory response. This natural response may destroy the supporting bone around the teeth.  The gums pull away from the teeth and form pockets.  These can fill with more plaque and lead to continued bone loss.  Teeth can become loose and eventually lost if not treated.  Daily cleaning to remove the plaque is essential to a healthy mouth and can help to prevent periodontal disease.

Periodontal Treatments

At Northbrook Periodontics & Implants we offer both surgical and non-surgical treatment of Periodontal Disease. Once a completed diagnosis, we will develop a treatment plan appropriate for your specific case. This treatment plan and all phases of it will be communicated and coordinated with your general dentist. The following are different treatment procedures offered by Dr. John Vickery, D.D.S., P.C.

Periodontal Scaling & Root Planing

This process involves a deep cleaning of the gum pockets, where the causative agents of periodontal disease; plaque and tartar are removed from the teeth. This treatment allows for healing of your gum tissue and reattachment to the teeth.

Pocket Reduction Surgery

Osseous surgery is a gum pocket reduction procedure during which infected bone and gum tissue will be removed and areas where bacteria can hide will be cleaned and smoothed out. This procedure allow for your gums to better reattach to healthy bone and eliminate gum pockets.

Tooth Extraction

Severe gum disease doesn’t just result in lost teeth—it can also affect the surrounding area. Tooth extraction prevents infections from spreading and averts additional tooth loss.
If you have periodontitis, the tooth removal procedure is similar to most other types of tooth extraction.
